Runners to Your Marks...

Problem

Who can run faster at long distance; boys or girls?

Introduction
I’ve always thought that boys could run faster than girls, but can they run faster when they are running a longer distance?

Background Information
  • Lots of people think that running is 10% physical, and 90% mental.
  • Boys have more muscle than girls.
  • Aerobic means “with oxygen”.
  • You need to have the right mindset to keep on going
  • Boys usually have a longer growth spurt than girls. The circulatory and respiratory system supply energy to the muscles.
  • The knees and other joints have less strain on them when you run with a good long stride.
  • Boys are usually taller, which means they can have long strides.
  • Running endurance depends on lung capacity.
  • You need to be strong to run a long time.
  • You can learn how to run faster.
  • Boys usually improve faster than girls.
  • Running with a friend is more motivating than running alone.

Hypothesis
I predict that the boys will be able to run faster because they have more metabolism and boys are usually stronger. They also seem more competitive than girls.

Materials
  • Boys and girls
  • Stopwatch
  • Meter stick
  • Paper
  • Pencil

Procedure
1. Gather all materials.
2. Make the people run around the softball field one at a time.
3. Time them until they cross the finish line.
4. Record their time.
5. Make observations.

Independent Variable- gender
Dependent Variable- the results
Controlled Variable- Four 8th grade boys and four 8th grade girls, same softball field, and letting them run the best that they can.

Results
Aubree Nuest- 1:29
Caylee Ames- 1:42
Rachel Carter- 1:58
Victoria McManus- 2:06

Luke Schweizer- 1:41
Michael Hendricks- 1:30
Kash Farney- 1:32
Trae Jones- 1:37

Conclusion
My hypothesis was correct! I took the average of the girls’ results and got 1:5875 minutes. Then I took the average of the boys’ results and got 1:35 minutes. The boys ran faster than the girls. Some possible causes of error were that some people might not have been feeling very well, some could have cheated, and the finish line might not have been in the same place all of the time. I observed that the boys all wanted to be the fastest. The girls just wanted to run and some were competitive.

Major Observations
I observed that the boys wanted to get the best time and they were competitive. Some of the girls wanted to see how fast they could run, and some just wanted to run!

Possible Application

Possible Cause of Error
The finish line might not have been in the same place all the time, people might have cheated.

Further Research
I could test high school kids and see what the results would be like, whether they would be the same or different.
